Chillaxing is inserting yourself into spaces that are trying to wean you out. I was born in Brooklyn; my grandmother's apartment is rent-controlled because she's been there since the 1980s. Every apartment in the building has been renovated except hers. They're trying to push her out; they're trying to push them all out. Gentrification is not new to me; it feels like it has been part of my upbringing in both cities I lived in. Reading this chapter in the book made me think about things that my family did back in New York. In the face of gentrification, change, new comers coming and changing neighborhoods and culture that has been there for years. Something done in my old neighborhood is a summer block party. Every year they block of 5th ave and have food, dancing, fun. Showcasing little details and things that show that we are still here and that the culture lives on through generations to come. Gentrification may be happening around them but this event feels like parts of thee history that remains, that eases the barrios change, even if its just for a weekend.
