Thanksgiving

Wow. I honestly have no words to describe what I feel after watching the video of Native American Girls describe what the real reason behind thanksgiving is. I didn't know that, I didn't know that any of that happened. I'm not surprised by my ignorance however, seeing how my education has been formulated to praise American history that focuses on praising the white man. Im devastated when thinking about how Native American history, culture, land is tripped away and made to seem like it never existed, like they were never here. Im distraught to know that I, like most of America celebrate such a despicable holiday out of sheer ignorance. They don't even have thanksgiving in the Dominican Republic but it's a celebration we have adopted due to what we were taught, better yet what we were specifically not taught.

I had a friend in High School that is Native American. For her sweet 16, she had it on the reservation in the museum in CT. That was the first experience I had ever had with the Native American culture but even then I could see how the history was one that at the time to me seemed like it couldn't be true. I couldn't even tell you what native American cuisine is outside of corn, and that just goes based off what I had seen in a Disney movie. So much information is erased and withheld, we're not even taught it in school when they are the real Americans. How is a typical US History class missing the most important history? It just makes you wonder what other pieces of history have been erased and thats terrifying. This will be the last year I celebrate Thanksgiving and I will strive to teach my children, family and friends the real history.
